Self & Peer Evaluations
Self & Peer Evaluations
Individual accountability is essential in team-based projects. Every team assignment in CSE120 uses a combination of team-level grading and individual adjustment.
How It Works
- Your team receives a base grade for the deliverable
- Individual contributions are evaluated through peer and self assessments
- Your individual grade is adjusted based on contributions
The adjustment uses a formula incorporating: - TA assessment (40%) — the TA evaluates your contributions - Peer ratings (50%) — your teammates rate your contributions - Self assessment (10%) — your own reflection
When Evaluations Happen
| Assignment | Evaluation |
|---|---|
| Lab 1 | Required for score — must complete |
| Lab 2 | Required for score — must complete |
| Lab 3 | Required for score — must complete |
| Lab 4.x | Per-iteration assessment |
| Final Project | End-of-semester assessment |
| Team Evaluation | Individual final submission |
Failure to complete a Peer- and Self- Assessment will result in a score of 0 for that assignment.
What's Evaluated
- Attendance at team meetings
- Quality and timeliness of contributions
- Collaboration and communication
- Reliability and responsiveness
- Overall team impact
📊 Research deep-dive: The individual multiplier formula was developed and validated across multiple semesters. See the CSED Lab's outcomes for data on grading fairness and the intentional negative skew in grade distribution.
Grading Impact
Minor peer friction (e.g., a student rated slightly below average) results in negligible grade impact. However, severe or repeated low contributions accelerate penalties rapidly. A minimum contribution threshold ensures penalties only apply when meaningful work is absent.
